You Can’t Hurry Love

This is one of my all-time favorite tracks. 🎶

Da da da~dadan da

When the main rhythm of this song rolls on its tracks, every instrument except the vocals becomes a carriage on that rhythm train. Even the tambourine, bass, and guitar – like a backdrop at a celebration – diligently follow the vocals with da da da~dadan da. As you listen, you get hooked on the rhythm, and any bad mood gets shredded away like carrots on a grater by the bouncing bass guitar. 🎸

First released by The Supremes under the Motown label in 1966, this track stormed the Billboard pop singles chart, the UK chart, and the Australian singles chart. It’s been remade countless times, but my favorite is the one by the American country band Dixie Chicks (now known as The Chicks) featured in the movie Runaway Bride. Even though I haven’t seen the movie, this song always makes me imagine a bride sprinting in her wedding dress.

In a sunlit, serene countryside church in the east, a bride who was all smiles saying ‘Yes, I’m happy.’ just ten minutes ago, suddenly jumps up in the waiting room and runs outside. Of course, just like the album cover suggests, she’s already got her sneakers on, so running is no problem. With the sun sparkling and the breeze gentle, she races down the empty street with a smile as bright as her fluttering wedding dress. 🌞👰

She’s dreaming of escaping from Thanatos to Eros, from Alcatraz to Las Vegas, from Ego to Id.

Though I don’t know anyone who’s experienced such a moment to ask about it, it seems like the ultimate freedom. The music is so upbeat that imagining a bride fleeing the ceremony doesn’t feel like a major event.

Not long ago, I was walking down the street and saw a woman sprinting like she was late for an appointment. Watching her, I instantly thought of the bride running with her wedding dress billowing in the wind to this song. But then, her pace slowed. As she passed by, I caught a glimpse of her face twisted with effort. Reality sure has its walls, doesn’t it? 😅

If you ever find yourself needing to move fast for any reason in the real world, I highly recommend grabbing a taxi over any dramatic BGM. 🚖
