The October track for Monthly Yoon Jong-shin 2021 is Lee Seung-gi’s ‘Slow Starter.’ 🎶 Give it a listen, and you’ll first notice a pretty dynamic melody that catches your attention. If you were listening in the background while doing something else, you might wonder, ‘Did two songs just play?’ It’s a lengthy track, almost hitting the 5-minute mark. Even without checking the composer, you’d know it’s a Yoon Jong-shin piece. Actually, this song is a remake of a track introduced in the January 2018 edition of Monthly Yoon Jong-shin.
I found myself thinking, ‘Was his voice always this captivating?’ The vocals sound slightly thinner than in other songs, making the details more pronounced. It’s not so much that his singing style changed, but the recording editor’s technique seems spot on. The high notes come through crystal clear, adding a layer of sadness to the song. 🎵 Of course, being a singer, having a good voice and singing well are givens. I really enjoyed the songs Yoon Jong-shin sang himself. Especially tracks from the ‘Behind The Smile’ album—I could have those playing in my ears all day!
But somehow, when I listen to songs by Yoon Jong-shin or Lee Seung-gi, I find it hard to get fully immersed. 🧐 Both have been in entertainment for so long that their speaking voices are just too familiar. They sing well, but it feels like I’m at karaoke with a close friend. While their friendly, approachable image is nice, I guess I prefer to enjoy their talents like discovering a familiar yet unexplored landscape. 🤔 Not everyone feels the same, so maybe it’s okay for me to think this way?
Anyway, Yoon Jong-shin didn’t sing like that, so why does Lee Seung-gi twist the final notes that way? 🤷♂️ There’s a reason why ‘habit’ is a common critique in audition evaluations.
