They Say the First Snow Came (I Had No Idea on the Day)
The thought of ‘first snow’ makes the heart flutter. But have you ever heard of ‘first rain’? That term might exist in the standard dictionary, but it’s not something we hear in everyday life. This shows how special snow is to people. Of course, there’s a certain charm to its physical properties: it’s cozy, it flutters down to rest on your nose, it turns the world white, and you can roll it up into a snowman. ☃️
Not that rain lacks identity, but it definitely doesn’t feel snug and warm. It falls too fast to watch, drenches everything selfishly, creates a cacophony, and traps you with unexpected puddles. Unless you’re indoors, it’s like battling through a storm.
Still, the reason ‘first rain’ isn’t a common term is probably more about its vague identity than its bad traits. Unlike snow, which is like a winter exclusive, rain is like a subway that circulates year-round. There’s spring rain, monsoon in summer, autumn rain, and even ‘winter rain’. Defining the first rain isn’t easy compared to the rare snowfall. 🌧️
Meet me ten years later on the day the first snow falls at Gwanghwamun Square…
You can’t make such romantic promises with rain. Even a light flurry of snow spreads like a winter cold virus, but rain can pour all day, unnoticed by Seoul’s ten million residents. If someone planned to meet on the first rainy day, they might end up watching the evening news and think, ‘Wait, it rained today? Oh no, Gwanghwamun!’ In fact, drizzle was falling this morning, but no one noticed, not even me as I walked through it. 🌫️
Around Christmas, weather experts calculate the chances of snow on the holiday. Watching the news about the first snow the other day got me curious about how they calculate the probability of a white Christmas. Turns out, they mostly use historical data from the past few decades in the region. While it makes sense, it seems lacking in effort. Climate changes with time, and environmental factors vary each year. Predicting it months in advance like weather forecasting isn’t easy, but the simplicity of the formula feels a bit underwhelming. 🌨️
Though I don’t have a better alternative formula to suggest…
