Thinking About Watching ‘Gothika’? Hold Up!

Ever heard of the movie Gothika? 🤔 Just yesterday, I was having a blast watching the SNL episode with Shin Hye-sun on Coupang Play. As I mindlessly browsed through other curated lists, this movie popped up. Starring Halle Berry, ‘Gothika’. I mean, Halle Berry looks stunning on the poster, so I couldn’t just pass it by. Upon digging deeper, I found out Robert Downey Jr. also stars in it. And hey, a mystery thriller is right up my alley! So, I hit play without hesitation, but oh, how I wish I hadn’t. Shouldn’t have done that.

First off, if you’re expecting a logical mind game, forget it. Movies where ghosts are the answer are just the worst, and unfortunately, this was one of them! I shouldn’t spoil it, but as soon as you start watching, the answer is painfully obvious. If I had to summarize it in a sentence…

A ghost-ridden, dull episode of a foreign ‘Tales from the Crypt’: ★☆☆☆☆

It’s been ages since I’ve watched a movie so not worth summarizing! If there’s a scene that stuck with me, it’s probably when Halle Berry escapes the prison while two guards rough her up. Halle jumping like that is impressive, but the supporting actors playing merciless guards who slam such a delicate actress to the ground are astonishing. 🤯 It almost seemed personal! And when she’s super ticked off, she shoves a nurse aside, practically body-checking him. Throwing an actor twice her size over a desk… foreigners are scary!

I always thought Robert Downey Jr. was cool as Iron Man, but without the beard here, he just seems… pathetic. 😅 Plus, his role is so insignificant in the movie, he just fades into the background, poor guy. Is that acting? Of course, he later becomes Iron Man, but still… One absurd scene is when a guard asks Halle Berry’s opinion on the criminal’s character. And she goes,

“Blah blah… grew up under a single mom, developed excessive obsession and inappropriate sexual interests, enjoyed animal cruelty as a kid, and as an adult, he’s lost in sexual identity… yada yada”

Is she a psychiatrist or a profiler? Not even close, more like a mystic. 😆 Anyway, even if you’ve got time to spare, skip this movie. TikTok clips with hip shakes and punches are at least short. The only redeemable bit was Limp Bizkit’s ‘Behind Blue Eyes’ playing over the end credits. This movie? Total ‘Gothika’ miss. What a waste of time. 😩
