I stumbled upon a column from 2019 on the internet about a band called ‘Broccoli, You Too’. The band’s name rang a bell, but the only track I knew was ‘No Encore Requests’. Thanks to my habit of listening to any catchy tune, I’ve heard most songs, but that’s about it. This band was like that too. Like a classmate from elementary school whose name you remember, but not much else… I don’t even know how many members are in this band.
The column started with the author reminiscing about an old piece they wrote, inspired by Broccoli, You Too’s song <2009’s Us>. It was a reflection on their journey as a rookie journalist in 1999. They thought they’d become an ace reporter in ten years, but that wasn’t quite the case. Yet, they were happy to write columns while enjoying their favorite music.
The journalist and his wife were obsessed with Broccoli, You Too’s debut album back in 1999, when they wrote that column, and their daughter was born in March of that year. Fast forward ten years, their little girl had grown into a fourth-grader. When Broccoli, You Too released their third album <Materialists> and announced a commemorative concert, he decided to go. It reminded him of listening to <2009’s Us> on the way back from the hospital, and he hoped his daughter, who had heard it too (albeit from the womb), would join him.
The article I found online was the touching story of a dad convincing his daughter to attend a concert with him under the guise of introducing a new album. Reading it warmed my heart. The daughter, who came along for the promise of a toy, adorably fell asleep at the concert, and the dad, who couldn’t clap properly for fear of waking her, was just as lovable. ❤️
Lately, with the occasional rain, the morning air feels refreshingly cool. After an early breakfast, I packed a bagel, a banana, and an orange that looked perfectly symmetrical like it was crafted in a factory, then grabbed my bike and headed out. The sky was as blue as a canvas. 🚴♂️
The weather quickly heated up, but with not a cloud in the sky and snacks in my bag, I was ready to roll. ☀️
I rode my bike along the river, listening to Broccoli, You Too’s <2009’s Us> all the way to Hannam-dong without stopping. With this song in my ears, I felt like I could pedal all the way to the ends of the earth. 🌍
