The Power of Hospitality

A buddy from San Francisco came to visit Seoul with his wife. He always called me ‘bro’ and with his impressive build, walking through Tenderloin felt like a breeze. Once a young man fresh out of the army, always laughing with a ‘ha ha ha’, he’s now married and his wife is six months pregnant. 🤰

After a long time, they came to Korea, and over dinner, we chatted in English for quite a while. Suddenly, his wife said to me, ‘Kurt, do you use English a lot at work? It sounds more natural than before.’ Since returning to Korea, I hadn’t had much reason to use English, and I wondered if I should keep studying. I never thought I’d get more fluent. But then again, language isn’t like memorizing geography; it’s more like drooling over something delicious—it just seeps in. I felt pretty good. 😌

After dinner, heading home, I messaged an American friend I hang out with these days, saying, ‘I met an old friend from the States, and he said my English has improved since back in the day. Do you think so too?’ A little later, her reply came.

Did you treat them to dinner?
