Thoughts on Laptop Storage Size

When you’re buying a laptop, the last thing that usually crosses your mind is the storage size. So, what do you guys choose? Lately, I’ve been opting for the minimum capacity because I’ve been using a lot of internet-based cloud services. This means fewer programs to install on my laptop. Plus, with most content being streamed, there’s no need to download files anymore. Honestly, I thought the era of massive storage was over.

But then, I started using xcode, Apple’s application development tool, for iPhone app development. This tool updates with every iPhone OS update and requires about 40GB of free space each time. Since my MacBook had the smallest storage option, finding space became a huge stressor. (Apple updates their OS quite frequently.)

With Mac OS, you can’t use an external hard drive for upgrades, so I had to manually sift through folders to delete files. Automatic updates from the App Store wouldn’t work due to lack of space, so I tried downloading compressed files from the developer site, but it was a waste of time (haha). This agony continued with every yearly MacBook OS upgrade.

– Excuse me, can I get through?
Tim Cook: No, you can’t.
– It seems like there’s a bit of space…
Tim Cook: There is not.
– Just move a bit back, I’ll be quick.
Tim Cook: Sorry, think of me as a wall.
– See, when I inhale (sigh), my body gets slimmer.
Tim Cook: It’s hopeless.
– Just squeeze a little to the side!
Tim Cook: Impossible.
– Look, if I take off my parka, and slide my backpack under my legs…
Tim Cook: You’ve tried hard, but it’s not enough.
-……
Tim Cook: Just buy the larger storage.

At this point, you’ve probably forgotten about getting through and just want to tell the person blocking the door off.

Who’s moving, you fool? Just stand by that door till you drop dead. If you even twitch, I’ll bash you with a MacBook recycled aluminum body. Got it, you psycho?

Honestly, I feel like throwing my MacBook onto a concrete floor at 50 km/h and buying a 512GB Mac, but being the mature adult I am now, I take a deep breath and calm down. Life is all about self-discipline.🧘‍♂️

P.S.: If you’re struggling like I did, try downloading an app called DevCleaner from the App Store. Xcode uses a crazy amount of cache.💾

P.S. 2: Later, the minimum spec for MacBooks was bumped up to 256GB, solving the issue. Oh wow, what a clever solution! Business folks, gotta love ’em (even though I’m one too).💼
