Back in June this year, Sunmi dropped her 7th digital single. The album featured two tracks: ‘Heart Burn’ and her self-composed song ‘Puppy Love’. While ‘Heart Burn’ enjoyed a sweet spot in the top 100 weekly charts for 10 weeks straight, ‘Puppy Love’ was left behind, a hidden gem. Personally, I vibe more with the retro feels of ‘Puppy Love’. As autumn’s breeze rolls in, this track is definitely in my top picks. 🍂

Recently, I stumbled upon a band version of this track on her YouTube channel. The highlight? Without a doubt, it’s that snappy bass line that kicks off the song. Artists naturally crank up the gain on their beloved instruments. (Sunmi rocked the bass back in her Wonder Girls days). Plus, her deep, rich vocals blend perfectly with those bass lines, like a seamless three-legged race. 🎸

On ‘Superband’, Yang Jang Se Min’s 5-string bass solo was jaw-dropping. Just add a couple more instruments, and the band would sound complete. Bands usually have that charming, sometimes offbeat synchronization, but with a member like this, everyone might feel on edge, trying not to mess up. Unlike guitars, fast-paced bass playing can easily sound messy due to its thicker strings, and excessive strokes or tapping can muddy the sound, dimming its identity. But to play at this level… wow, the world is full of incredible talent. 🎶

Speaking of band synergy and restraint, Yoon Jong Shin’s ‘Temperature of Farewell’ is a perfect example. No instrument, not even Bae Doo Na’s acting, overshadows the vocals. Each part is expertly played, like watching a perfectly balanced scale. The lead guitar by Lee Sang Soon deserves applause for its restraint, maintaining balance with the vocals without overpowering them. But the reason I highlight this song is because of Yoon Sang’s bass, which makes an incredible impact in the background. Personally, I think Yoon Sang is at his coolest when he’s playing the bass. 🎵

The world is filled with deeply skilled individuals. Yet, recognizing true talent takes time, and often, there’s not much substance behind the facade. It’s frustrating to waste time with stubborn people who know little. That’s why I love the arts, where talent is immediately evident. Whether it’s a song, a performance, or an artwork, it’s like a needle poking through your pocket — you just know. And, you can respect and love them without exchanging a word. 🎨
