‘Was there ever a year that flew by like an arrow quite like this?’ It was a year that felt unfamiliar, maybe because I’m not one to make changes myself. So here’s my personal ranking for this whirlwind of a year…
1. Song of the Year: Yoo Hee-yeol’s ‘Radio Heaven’
It was around the time Yoo Hee-yeol was caught in a plagiarism dispute. Netflix released a music show called ‘Take One’ featuring him among other artists. While I usually skip to the music parts, Yoo Hee-yeol’s episode had me glued for an entire hour. The finale featured ‘Radio Heaven’, a song that used to open his concerts. Since then, I’ve replayed it over a hundred times. It’s a warm tune that embraces the past while crossing into new horizons. ๐ถ
2. Musician of the Year: Yura (not Girl’s Day Yura)
An incredible voice that debuted with ‘My Head is Green’ alongside 015B. I bet you can’t listen to ‘Laundry’ just once! ๐ค
3. Band of the Year: Dio
Not sure why, but I listened to them a lot this year. It’s like the song ‘Don’t Talk to Strangers’ tells you ‘Just listen, don’t think. Seriously.’ That honest drum beat at the climax is unforgettable, even when waking up. ๐ฅ
4. Rediscovery of the Year: Prince’s ‘Reflection’
I’ve always liked Prince, but how did I miss the beauty of ‘Reflection’ from the Musicology album? Walking with this tune makes me feel like I’m the protagonist of ‘Midnight in Paris’. ๐
5. Cutie of the Year: Le Sserafim’s Chaewon
Her flat nose is just adorable. ๐ฅฐ
6. Drama of the Year: Dark
Absolutely mind-blowing. A must-watch, especially if you’re into science. ๐
7. Variety Show of the Year: Check-in to Canada
It kicked off in 2022, so it’s definitely this year’s show. If nothing else pops up in 2023, it might clinch the title again. Lee Hyori is genuinely amazing. Also, people who abandon dogs deserve karma. ๐พ
8. Movie of the Year: Decision to Leave
Initially, I wasn’t impressed, but it grew on me over time. Now, I sing its praises, though a friend keeps reminding me of my first reaction, which is a bit awkward. ๐ฌ
9. Book of the Year: ‘A Woman’, Annie Ernaux
It was refreshing compared to other authors. But the next read, ‘Shame’, didn’t quite hit the same for me. Both were similar, but the second time lacked freshness. To build an identity, repetition is key for audiences to recognize its features, yet it risks being labeled dull. However, once youโre gone, audiences become forgiving. Art is tough. ๐
10. Device of the Year: Steam Deck
There’s just so much you can do with it. The legendary Jiang Taigong might’ve chosen fishing to pass time, but if he lived today, I’d recommend the Steam Deck. ๐ฎ
11. Prediction of the Year: Meta’s Downfall
Ever since Facebook, Zuckerberg never struck me as someone who could read the times. ๐
12. Technology of the Year: ChatGPT
For those in average or below writing jobs, it’s time to seriously consider survival. (I’m already on it, but no answers yet.) ๐ค
13. Game of the Year: Elden Ring
From Dark Souls to Elden Ring, I still can’t beat the first boss. Yet, even just trying, I feel its brilliance deep within. Games are true art, and people need to realize that. ๐ฎ
14. Exercise of the Year: Plank with Hip Dips
It’s brutally tough. If there’s no effect, I’m ditching it. ๐ช
15. Persistence of the Year: Buying Xbox Series X
Skipped lunch to try buying it first-come, first-served seven times. I think I kept at it out of frustration, so when I finally succeeded, I was a bit taken aback. ‘Did I really want this…?’ ๐ฎ
16. Crisis of the Year: Building a Friend’s Desktop, Power Caught Fire
The power supply was faulty. Got it replaced, and everything was fine, but I’m not accepting these requests again. ๐ฅ
17. Blunder of the Year: Buying Two Copies of the Same Book
Ordered two copies of ‘Natural Language Processing with BERT and GPT’ in the same order and haven’t even opened them yet. ๐คฆโโ๏ธ
18. App of the Year: Naver Maps
For someone like me who easily gets lost, it might just be the ‘app of life’… ๐บ๏ธ
19. YouTuber of the Year: ์ํ์ฝ๋ฉ
Such a soothing voice. But could they maybe speak a bit faster? ๐บ
20. Influencer of the Year: Tanaka
You must watch the episode with Le Sserafim. I first saw him here and thought he was Japanese. ๐
21. Plague of the Year: COVID-19
I thought I’d never catch it, but three years later, it got me. -_-;
