Are you the kind of person who starts a book or a drama and sticks with it until the end? 📚🎬 I have far more books that I closed halfway than those I finished, and dramas that remain a mystery to me because I never saw the finale. When I was younger, with fewer ways to access books and so much more time, I would push through even the dullest reads. I spent my time on it, after all, and could criticize it as much as I praised it.
But these days, with so many ways to dive into content and so little time, if something doesn’t grab me right away, I drop it. 😅 The unfinished stories pile up, tagged in my mind, waiting for a day when I might revisit them. Let’s pull out a few dramas from that list (though you might not be curious):
SKY Castle: The pressure of exams made my chest feel tight just one episode in, so I had to stop.
Orange is the New Black: The identical prison uniforms got a bit too monotonous for me.
Itaewon Class: Kim Da-mi’s bob cut was just not working for me, so I bailed.
The Queen’s Gambit: Anya Taylor-Joy is stunning, but without any interest in chess, I couldn’t connect.
The Social Dilemma: Felt like I already knew what it was going to say.
Life: Cho Seung-woo, my hero from Secret Forest, playing a bad guy? It killed my interest (though I might be wrong since I didn’t finish it).
Hospital Playlist: Every episode felt like a tearjerker, and that was a bit much for me.
Goblin: Kim Go-eun is adorable, but I just couldn’t get past Lee Dong-wook’s hat.
Designated Survivor: Loved season 1, but the thought of it dragging on like ‘24’ made me quit.
Breaking Bad: It came highly recommended, yet I’ve watched the desert bus scene over 20 times and just couldn’t move on.
Listing them out, I’m shocked by how many I haven’t even started. Most of these were top recommendations, making it awkward, but hey, personal taste is king. 👑 A Japanese novel by Kazuki Takano called ‘Genocide’ was recommended to me too, but I must have read the strategic meeting scene at the beginning over a dozen times. Every attempt meant starting from scratch, and that scene is etched in my mind like a movie. Ironically, five years later, I finally finished it, and it was pretty great.
There are also many songs I’ve only heard the opening of. Lee Hi’s ‘Holo’ is one I skipped because the start didn’t grab me, and I still don’t know the climax. Of course, there are songs like Savina & Drones’ ‘Where Are You’ that I added to my playlist after just the opening breath of the vocals.
Going on about this, I feel a bit silly and want to apologize to all the creators of the content I mentioned.
I’m sorry. I promise I’ll give them another shot someday.
