Singles’ Day and Smart Shopping

The new iPhone can save high-definition videos directly to an external SSD. 📱 Even though I’m not one to shoot videos often, I was eager to test this out. To do so, I’d need to get a new microB – usb-C cable. Of course, such cables can be easily found on AliExpress. Once I opened the app, it was a sea of Singles’ Day and Black Friday banners. Oh right, it’s the end-of-year shopping season. I recently heard news about some AliExpress stores raising prices before Singles’ Day just to fake high discounts. 🤔

I ignored the banners and immediately searched for the cable I needed. Prices ranged from $3 to $10. After carefully considering speed and brand, I decided on the most reasonable $5 cable and added it to my cart. When I went to checkout, I noticed that other items I had absentmindedly added before were also on sale. 💡

‘Ah, I remember being interested in this stuff back then.’

Smiling at my past innocent interests, a large electric screwdriver caught my eye. It was a bit pricey, but it could adjust motor speed in six steps, unlike the one at home, which only had two. It was now 40% off, making it just $40. I couldn’t recall the original price, but it was certainly more than $40. After all the mishaps lately, including a car accident, I felt justified in treating myself. A lot of DIY projects awaited me. I had seen a YouTuber carve wood to make a desk. Why did I stop at realizing my dream desk didn’t exist? I could just make it myself. A power screwdriver is essential; otherwise, I’d risk injuring my wrist. By screwing at the lowest speed, there’s no risk of injury, and if I’m rushed, I can always use the highest speed. With these thoughts, I felt the urgency to buy before it sold out. I wasn’t alone in this thought. 🛠️

Suddenly, the Singles’ Day banner caught my eye again. Get $4 off every $20 spent? And there’s a coupon code for $10 off at $90? These discounts could stack. My logical suspicion: if true, buying over $90 would practically mean getting the screwdriver for free. The AliExpress managers probably never imagined a consumer cracking their secret. But with my mathematical skills, I was able to outsmart them. Or at least, I was trying to. My heart was pounding with excitement. 💓

With time running out, I needed to coolly assess what I truly needed. Let’s avoid buying unnecessary items just for discounts. I can’t stand irrational decisions. First, I grabbed a wireless charger. Everyone knows you can’t have too many chargers. Then, a thermal printer, which can print adorable stickers. As I’m pretty decent at drawing, it felt necessary. I could also print labels for names or products. The possibilities were endless. I could draw a quirky character saying ‘Trust Me’ and stick it on a friend’s phone. It seemed so useful that I added a pack of five transfer papers to the cart too. 🎨

After adding a few items, I couldn’t think of anything else I needed. I was getting anxious the screwdriver might sell out. Then, in the related items of the thermal printer, I found a camera with thermal printing capabilities. It prints photos instantly. What a brilliant idea! Perfect as a gift for the kids in the family. With Christmas approaching, getting cool gifts on a budget seemed like wise spending. I quickly added two cameras to the cart, thinking I might want one too. Now, the total was $95. 🎅

Checking out, I confirmed the coupons applied as hypothesized. Do OpenAI developers feel this way when they achieve AGI? I completed my purchase and, with a mix of relief and disbelief, pulled out my external SSD from the desk. Inside, I found a usb-A – usb-C adapter. When did I buy this? I absentmindedly attached it to my existing external SSD cable… 🔌

‘Wait, this is the cable I wanted to buy!’

I connected it to the new iPhone, and it was immediately recognized. High-definition video was saved straight to the external SSD. 🎥

What did I even do today?

Not like it’s the first time this happened.
