Diary 2023-8-20

This morning, I was biking and picked up a little speed. Suddenly, I felt a chill beneath my shorts. It’s one of those days where the midday heat feels like it could melt the world, yet the sudden scent of autumn catches you off guard. Maybe after a good half-day rain that taps on our umbrellas, it’ll be time to break out the fall wardrobe. ๐Ÿ‚

Nell appeared on IU’s Palette. IU, always the seasoned host, seemed a bit tense this time around. Could it be because she wanted to introduce her respected musical seniors well? Her warm heart shone through, and I couldn’t help but smile. ๐Ÿ˜Š

The clip features a ‘Color Switch’ segment where they swap and sing each other’s songs. It’s fascinating to hear the reasons behind choosing each other’s tracks and the stories behind the originals. These behind-the-scenes tales make me even more intrigued by the songs. As IU finished Nell’s ‘Earth Turns Around the Sun Four Times’, the drum ending hit me right in the feels. Heart pounding. ๐ŸŽถ

On a slightly different note, I recently heard Park Jae-jung’s ‘Let’s Break Up’ in Kim Dong-ryul’s voice via deepfake technology. The quality was amazing, but it felt strange. Perhaps it’s because I don’t like the idea of reducing music to mere output, ignoring the artist’s time and soul invested in creating, singing, and remaking it.

Humans have a finite lifespan, and we can’t live forever. That’s why content crafted with dedication during our allowed time holds value in both time and spirit. Once an artist passes, no new content can be created, and people acknowledge and cherish their legacy. That’s what makes life beautiful. Is it natural to rudely use algorithms to resurrect the deceased against their will? I’m not sure. ๐Ÿค”

Do you think every artist feels a bit of regret on their final track? But there’s a reason it’s the last track…

Hearing IU’s words made me want to explore every musician’s final album track. Half out of support for their efforts and struggles, and half out of genuine curiosity about every artist’s last track.

A friend I hadn’t seen for over a year and a half due to a sudden move to the U.S. came to visit Korea. We gathered with old colleagues for a drink, and it’s amazing how close friends feel like you saw them just yesterday, no matter how long it’s been. This friend, serious and a bit of a worrier, is quite fun to tease. ๐Ÿ˜„

– That’s why the variety of jobs and the demand for workers will shrink more than we imagine.

‘Well, there’s labor law, so it won’t be easy to just cut down on manpower.’

– It’s hard to lay off, but companies might stop hiring. Plus, if something is deemed unnecessary, won’t they find ways to circumvent the law?

‘ESG management is a hot topic, and companies won’t abandon their social responsibilities.’

– The real issue isn’t just jobs but that humanity might lose control over key algorithms.’

‘Governments will probably create laws to manage that.’

– The pace of change is too fast, and the technology too complex, making it challenging to establish proper control.’

‘Won’t those developing the technology also have concerns?’

– Have you seen Oppenheimer?’

‘….’

Seeing her almost on the verge of tears, I switched the topic back to work, only to make things gloomier. ๐Ÿ˜

The taxi driver said the most annoying passengers are those who fall asleep drunk. They don’t say where they’re going and don’t plan to get out upon arrival. Since I tend to fall asleep when drunk, my kind friends sent me messages when I got in the taxi, either worried or just teasing me. ๐Ÿ˜…

But,

It was true. Maybe a bit exaggerated, but they don’t make things up.
