Chiang Mai and the GLN Service

In countries where cash is king, managing all that change can be more annoying than you expect. Sometimes it’s hard to tell the value of coins just by their size, leaving you standing at the checkout like a puzzled statue 🌲, eventually handing over a pile of coins to the cashier, hoping for the best. πŸ’β€β™‚οΈ

‘I received a letter from my son deployed in Pakistan, but I can’t read it.’

It feels like handing a letter to a local youth for help with reading it. But with GLN, you won’t face such troubles in Chiang Mai anymore! πŸ’Ό GLN, which stands for Global Loyalty Network, is a subsidiary of Hana Bank offering overseas payment services. It’s a blockchain-based financial service that lets you make quick payments via QR codes in places like Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, Hong Kong, Laos, Taiwan, Singapore, and Guam. 🌏

To use this service, just load up your GLN account with some funds. When you pay, the amount is automatically converted into the local currency without any exchange fees. Most banks and fintech apps now offer GLN services, so if your bank account supports it, you can use it without needing any extra apps or certificates. Plus, some financial institutions offer cashback or other events to promote the service, so stay curious and see what’s out there! (There’s a GLN app too.) πŸ“±

Though I haven’t tried it elsewhere, in Chiang Mai, I could use GLN for everything except tips and 7-Eleven purchases. Even with Grab (a ride-sharing service like Uber), if you select cash payment, you can pay with GLN. Just say ‘scan’ when paying, and it’s like casting a spell to open a magic gate; I used it all day and barely touched any coins! 🏦✨

Some might say, ‘I don’t want to lose the charm of jingling coins!’ If that’s you, no worries, you don’t have to use the app. Digital services are woven with various solutions and can have glitches. I always carry cash too. But with everything working smoothly, you’ll save on exchange fees and skip the change puzzle. Bring both cash and GLN, and your trip could be more pleasant than you think. πŸ’ΈπŸŒŸ

Everyone, shout ‘scan’ in Chiang Mai, okay?
