Why Chiang Mai is the Ultimate Destination for the Laid-Back Traveler

Chiang Mai isn’t exactly packed with attractions or iconic landmarks. (Sure, I might have missed something, but this is my third visit, so I’m pretty confident there’s not much to see.) Yet, I find myself quite fond of Chiang Mai. Until now, I wasn’t sure why, but it’s clear to me now: it’s precisely because there aren’t many places to visit or impressive landmarks. This means you don’t have to exhaust yourself chasing activities that fit the ‘travel’ label.

The reason I dislike typical travel is the cliché of being dragged around. Like when visiting San Francisco, you feel compelled to snap photos at Union Square, catch an MLB game at Oracle Park, watch seals at the Pier, or ride a crowded cable car.

But Chiang Mai is different. After waking up in the hotel and having breakfast, your biggest dilemma is what to eat for lunch. There’s not much else to do. If you’re bored, just step out for a massage at a nearby spa. Then comes the next meal decision. Walking around, you might explore quaint shops or street stalls, and before you know it, it’s time to eat again. Splash around in the hotel pool, and soon you’ll feel hungry. In Chiang Mai, I’ve never had to worry about anything else. It’s always been this delightful dilemma.

What’s on the menu next? 🍜

Thankfully, Chiang Mai is overflowing with eateries, so you won’t have to ponder your meal choices for long. 🍽️

A city I wholeheartedly recommend to the laid-back traveler, Chiang Mai. 🌿
