My Ex-Boyfriend and the Curse

Had dinner with some old work buddies after a long time. Since we only meet about three or four times a year, catching up takes quite a while. Plus, everyone loves to chat, turning it into a lively battle to get a word in. Even when someone misses their chance to speak, their laughter fills the gaps like a well-rehearsed audio track. Thanks to their spirited nature, we almost got kicked out of a restaurant a few times, but they couldn’t care less, always reminding themselves of the mantra ‘Unyielding spirit’. Not exactly what that phrase was coined for, but hey, it works.

But today, one friend naturally took the spotlight because her news was just too big. She recently got married. The twist? The star of this story wasn’t her husband, but her ex-boyfriend.

Of course, we know her ex just as well as we know her husband. Probably even more, since back when we hung out, she was deep in a relationship with him. The former couple was a mix of love, fights, rivalry, and snooping. She loved sharing her tales, making us feel like we were listening to a live radio drama. Their precarious relationship dragged on, causing her immense stress (directly from her) and probably vice versa (we assume from her accounts).

Eventually, she broke up with him and met someone new, largely thanks to us. We were worried about their mutual obsession and encouraged her to move on. She went through a turbulent journey of empathy, regret, resolve, curses, and obsession to finally cut ties with her ex. Even with her new boyfriend, she didn’t lose her focus and intensity, and kept us updated via messenger. 🤳

‘He likes basketball. (She’s never played the game) Should I suggest we play? How about a wish-granting basketball game?’

Clearly, she just wanted to grant a wish. (She even called it a ‘wish-granting’ game) Luckily, her new boyfriend was easygoing, leading them into a peaceful relationship and eventually to marriage. Something about it feels a bit too calm for her usual flair, though.

‘But why did the ex call out of the blue?’

A couple of weeks ago, while slightly tipsy and heading home, she got a call from her ex, the protagonist of that intense love story. Nearly three years since their breakup, why call now? He wanted to share that he was getting married next week. Is that really something you call your ex about after three years? It’s baffling communication. She, not to be outdone, announced her own marriage, much to his surprise. Why so shocked, though? Was he fishing for a gift, perhaps? But no, it wasn’t that.

‘When we broke up… you left quite the curse.’

She had returned his belongings to his doorstep, along with pages filled with curses she had penned in a moment of heartbreak.

‘I filled every line with a different curse. I was really hurting back then.’

Your future relationships will be hell, you’ll have a short life, and soon you’ll be impotent. A complete physical wreck beyond counseling, unable to have children. Your partners will be after your money, but you’ll have none. Your girlfriend will date your friend and marry him. You’ll even pay for their wedding. Every time you button your shirt, your fingers will be bitten. Every meal will have stones, and within a year, you’ll end up with a grim, Gollum-like bald head. Every time you lift a document, you’ll get paper cuts that never heal, turning into a haven for tetanus….

She doesn’t remember all the details but managed to intricately weave a variety of curses into two pages. It’s apparently harder than filling them with compliments.

‘Ever filled two pages with compliments?’

‘…….’ (Her)

‘…’ (Us)

Anyway, the consensus was that her ex wanted to lift the curse before his wedding. Despite all his scheming and troubles he caused her, carrying such a heavy curse into marriage must’ve weighed on him. The mystical forces that sneak into a person’s vulnerable mind can sometimes draw out a declaration as potent as traffic easing up near the parliament.

‘But seriously, who marries a guy like that?’

Apparently, she’s a designer with long hair and seems quite naive.

Her answer gave us all a brief chill. 😨
