‘I wish you’d play the song I’m thinking of!’
This was what Lee Sang-soon said with an expectant look when Hyori, sitting in the passenger seat, started rummaging to play some music during the first episode of ‘Hyori’s Homestay’ that I stumbled upon online. As the music she chose began to play, he beamed with a smile full of warmth.
‘I was thinking of that song too…’
It felt like a miracle. In the short time they were driving together in Jeju, amidst countless songs like grains of sand on the beach, she played the one he wanted to hear. Sure, they’re a couple and probably listen to similar songs daily, but still… The track was ‘White Gloves’ by Khruangbin, a perfect driving tune for that moment. The kind of guitar session that would remind anyone of Lee Sang-soon. No wonder he loved it. I quickly saved it to my playlist before the title slipped from my mind.
Once upon a time, I was at a small coffee shop, waiting to order. The barista asked me to wait a moment as she put on some music. Since I had all the time in the world and there were no customers behind me, I nodded and glanced at the menu. Suddenly, I found myself yearning to hear Patty Smyth’s ‘Sometimes Love Just Ain’t Enough.’ Out of nowhere, the song started playing from the tiny speakers on the café ceiling. That’s not something that happens every day.
Listening to it, I ordered an Americano and sat down, waiting for my friend. She arrived thirty minutes late, but I still remember that day as pretty magical. It felt like holding a lottery ticket, where four numbers in a row are a perfect match.
Come to think of it, sharing a love for the same music is quite something special. Maybe that’s why people share songs with those they care about. It’s a cool idea but not always easy since everyone’s taste is as varied as the stars in the sky. I enjoy peeking into others’ playlists like reading a secret diary, but I rarely add their songs to mine. Though, if it’s someone like Lee Hyori’s playlist, I might snatch at least one track.
Anyway, Khruangbin’s music is not only great for sunset drives but also perfect for rainy days. Give it a listen if you can~
