So, my coworker had a mix-up with plans and asked me to have dinner with the new intern instead. This intern, who’s on a break from her IT studies, was full of career questions and asked what I did at university to prepare for my current job. These questions always leave me stumped because I honestly have nothing truly insightful to share. Sure, I’m a pro at dodging them, but I realized I should probably come up with a story for situations like this. Anyway, since I’m not ready, let’s switch topics. 😅
– By the way, you mentioned watching YouTube at home, right? The subscription economy is one of the hot topics in business these days.
‘Subscription economy? Like Netflix? Does YouTube fall into that too?’
– Broadly speaking, even SNS services can be seen that way. Following someone is kind of like subscribing.
‘But, you don’t pay a fee, do you?’
It’s not like I had a solid point here, but I could roll with it. If I hesitate now, I might come off as shallow. Plus, I’m pretty good at connecting the dots—like during blind dates, linking people or finding common ground between vastly different hobbies. Guess I did do something during university!
– True, but users producing quality content get recognized as content providers, and consumers subscribe to keep getting that valuable content. Sure, subscribers don’t pay directly, but when numbers grow, that creator’s account becomes a money-making platform. Advertisers judge a creator’s value by their subscriber count.
Suddenly remembered a promo from a celeb gossip channel I follow, offering goodies for paid membership. That movie memo notebook was tempting! 🎥
– Also, YouTube recently added a paid channel membership feature.
‘Oh, got it.’
Nailed it! No need to spill my unplanned life story to a newbie. I kept chatting.
– But, increasing subscribers is tough. There’s a lot of competition, and the curation logic that decides main content exposure isn’t public.
Thinking about how I started an Instagram account on a friend’s advice, drew and posted diligently for three years, but still haven’t hit 400 followers. I smiled wryly, then she spoke up.
‘I just made a YouTube account, uploaded some random videos, and got a message saying I have over 5000 followers. Google even emailed me recently about claiming a prize, like 100,000 won or something…’
…
..
Wow
So jealous
‘Oh. So, what did you do in college to prepare for the job you have now?’
…
Oh… Oh no…!
